The Shinmonzen, located on Gion’s “Shinmonzen Dori” is one of my favorite properties in Kyoto. Combining western design alongside Japanese tradition you’ll find a cultural and refined property ideal for the modern traveller. A project by contemporary architect Tadao Ando, you can truly see the passion and details he put into the five star hotel. Their restaurant Jean-Georges is a must for refined fine dining and a taste of local ingredients alongside exceptional technique. The wine pairing was equally impressive featuring bottles from their sister property, La Coste in Provence. The romantic and artistic neighbourhood is rich in history boasting immaculate streets and picturesque scenery. It truly felt like stepping into a painting throughout our stay. Each of their nine suites are unique and sumptuous incorporating traditional Japanese tatami bedding alongside a modern and sleek lounge and living area. The private balcony overlooking the calm neighborhood and river was my favorite feature. An unforgettable stay and a must for those who want style and luxury fused with tradition and culture at one of the most sought after locations in Kyoto.
